rjr.fan on "Chris Tomlin's unspeakable desecration"

Imagine sitting down to a steak dinner -- and someone surreptitiously slips in a slice of slimy liver. Our church had a wonderful carol service – except for someone's attempt to "improve" upon Joy to the World by omitting a few verses about Jesus and interposing banal repetitive bleatings about the excitement of being excited!

SURELY Christmas is the ONE time of the year when we can focus on Jesus, instead of our precious feelings about our precious feelings. SURELY the carols that have been sung for several hundred years, and as we have sung them all our lives, are GOOD ENOUGH as they are! Surely Jesus is a worthy enough topic to deserve the full attention of a song, AT LEAST for one week of the year!

Turns out the culprit was Chris Tomlin. He could not leave well enough alone, but had to “tag” a masterpiece by spray-painting his banal, inane, GODLESS graffiti across it.

The deity of humanism is humanity, in its capacity for religious feelings. Humanism is a totally immanent faith, with no transcendent dimension. The old carols and hymns of the church were about God, about Jesus, about doctrine, and about real-world implications.

Trite humanistic ditties are about me, precious me, and how I FEEL at the moment.

And now, this greatest of Christmas carols, this exuberant and defiant anthem of the event that changed history forever, is no longer focused on Jesus, and what He did, but on a new deity, me and how I feel.

O please, on the day that commemorates the ultimate miracle, the Word made flesh, PLEASE, on THIS day, could we sing about JESUS? We can sing about our oh, so precious selves and our oh, so precious religious experiences the other 51 weeks of the year!

Hello, my name is Jim. I just finished a masters program at UNC and will start a new software engineering job in Morrisville pretty soon. I have a lease in Carrboro that will end on July 10th.

At the end of this month, I'd like to move to south Durham (ideally someplace along I-40 near southpoint / Fayetteville Rd.). I'm interested in sharing an inexpensive apartment (or house) with a few other housemates.

If you are looking for a housemate or have a room to rent, you can reach me at 828 551-0939 or JLaddJr@gmail.com.

Painkiller6, we are slowly pulling more attention to this site. We have been directing people to post their item availability to this area for a while, but we have also started including its availability in our weekly e-news (at bottom).

If you have any ideas to add (more categories, similar to Craigslist or ways to corral contributors and viewers, etc.), please let us know!! We are excited to get the word out in practical ways.

Thanks for your thoughts!

For the last decade or so, wise Baptists have proposed a resolution on the floor of the SBC national convention, calling upon all faithful Christian parents to IMMEDIATELY yank their kids out of public schools. As I would put it, "It is a sin to render unto Caesar that which is God's -- the children entrusted to our care."

All education is religious education. Who is supreme in your universe, Christ or Caesar? Your decision about the education of your children loudly proclaims your answer to that question.

I have enjoyed more than 32 years of delight with the wife of my youth, and am grieved by the number of gracious single ladies in our church, who yearn to be married, but confront a paucity of available godly men. It has been a prayer burden for some years, now; what do we need to do to make KPIC a man-friendly church?

If we can engage the men, the ladies will get engaged.

I remember how masculine the Jesus Freak guys tended to be, especially in contrast to the wimpy "church Christians," who were the products of a popular christian culture that confused spirituality with femininity.

So often, music leaders are like children sitting in a cobwebby treasure vault, surrounded by incredibly precious and beautiful ornaments -- and playing with disposable plastic trinkets.

A Simpson's episode features a gospel music singer. At one point, her band deserts her, and "goes secular." It's easy -- "All you have to do is replace the word 'Jesus' with 'Baby.'"

A godly scholar, Leon Podles, "wrote the book" on the feminization of the Western church. In fact, that's the title: "The Church Impotent: The Feminization of Christianity." Somehow, Christianity has a reputation for being fey, effete, simpering, suitable for "old ladies of all ages and both sexes." Even our own KPIC campus ministries report having twice as many gals as guys participating.

Podles lays the blame at the feet of Bernard of Clarvaux, who applied a corporate metaphor (the church as the Bride of Christ) to the individual worshiper (all of us guys must be sweet little wifeys for Jesus).

Could we perhaps reduce the ratio of "Jesus is my girlfriend" worship music? Perhaps add a little testosterone, and some brains, to celebrate the objective wonders of the attributes of God?

Thanks!

First off, we need to explain the difference between a "post" and a "topic".

A post is simply one message, written and published on this forum by any registered user.

A topic is something like a folder of messages or "posts" published on this forum.

Have an idea for a topic, such as "Giveaways" or "Sermon Feedback"?

Each topic name must be approved by a Forum administrator, but once it's approved, you are then able to add posts to that topic as you wish!

Just email us at media@kpic.org, and we'll help you set up a new topic.

Happy Posting!
